If Coincidence Is a False Concept, How Would We Live Our Lives?

As a Christian dark fantasy author, I often wrestle with the concept of coincidence. In my stories, where light and darkness constantly clash, the idea that events occur purely by chance seems implausible. The more I reflect, the more I wonder: If coincidence is a false concept, how would we live our lives, particularly in terms of faith, destiny, and relationships?
In a society increasingly skeptical of divine purpose, it’s easy to think that life is simply a series of random events. The chaos we see around us can trick us into believing that nothing has meaning or design. However, as a Christian, I believe this view overlooks something profound: the presence of a higher power guiding our lives. I don't see coincidence; I see God's hand in every moment. Every encounter, decision, and event has a purpose, even if we can't fully grasp it.
The Bible tells us that God is sovereign over all things. In Jeremiah 29:11, God declares, "For I know the plans I have for you… plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." If this is true, then nothing in our lives is random. Even the smallest of encounters—whether with loved ones or strangers—is part of a divine plan.
In my writing, this belief shapes how I craft my characters’ journeys. Though they face what seem like random twists of fate, as I develop the story, I see that each event is part of a greater, divinely orchestrated narrative. Their destinies, while not always clear, are guided by something bigger than themselves. They may not understand it, but the randomness they perceive is far from accidental.
If coincidence is a false concept, how should we live? It means every action matters, and every moment holds significance. Christians are called to be intentional with our lives, knowing that our decisions contribute to a grander plan. The Apostle Paul encourages us in Romans 12:18: "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone."
This verse challenges us to seek peace in every interaction, understanding that our relationships are not random. In a world full of division, living this out can be difficult, but it’s crucial. If we truly believe that nothing happens by chance, then each interaction becomes a chance to reflect God’s love. Living peaceably isn’t passive; it’s an active pursuit of reconciliation, unity, and grace.
Imagine a society that views every moment as part of a divine narrative. What would happen if we recognized that every interaction—every conversation, every encounter—has purpose? People would approach life with more intention, valuing others and seeking peace rather than conflict.
As Christians, we are called to be agents of peace, to live with purpose and to love others as part of a larger divine plan. If we embrace the truth that there are no coincidences, we begin to see the world differently. Every choice, every moment, and every relationship become an opportunity to fulfill God’s will.
In my dark fantasy worlds, characters wrestle with fate, often unsure whether their paths are random or divinely guided. But, as I guide them, I remind myself and my readers that God’s plan is at work—even in the darkest moments.
Ultimately, the question isn’t whether coincidence exists. It’s whether we live as though every moment is meaningful, guided by divine purpose. And if we do, our lives and the stories we tell will reflect that truth.
